Course Description
Exploring Surgical Issues exposes student’s to a variety of issues related to surgical technology today with an emphasis placed on ethics, morals, legalities and controversial issues. Students will discover the challenges that may be faced when personal morals and ethics differ from professional expectations and the legal ramifications of their choices. Additionally, this class will prepare the student to function as an ethical, legal and professional member of the healthcare team within the surgical technologist’s scope of practice (COS) as determined by the Association of Surgical Technology and industry standards. Once an understanding of ethics, morals and legal responsibilities is obtained, students will apply these standards to controversial topics such as abortion, transgender patients, gene manipulation, death and dying, euthanasia and other topics that are currently trending in the healthcare field.
