Diversity
Diversity in learning can be represented in two ways, background and learning styles. A student’s cultural background and beliefs can sometimes influence the way they learn and interact with others, the very nature of this course itself is a direct assessment of this application as it requires the students to apply their personal beliefs, in addition to the patients, to the varied dilemmas that they will be exploring. This will be assessed by the level of participation and contributions made to the discussions, small group activities, debate, self-reflective blog and the portfolio. Consistent instructor monitoring and facilitation is required of the instructor through-out these activities to verify that diversity is being interjected into the material.
Variable learning styles are also addressed through the selection of activities and tools by using different forms of communication and application to successfully achieve the required outcome of the assignment. Blogs are ideal for the introverted student that works well by themselves, it also alleviates pressure to respond immediately which can be a relief for this type of learner. The small group activities, debate and discussions allow those students that work well in small and/or large groups by allowing them a medium that they can easily voice their opinions and ideas. A combination of the tools touches on all of the different learning styles except hands-on applications which are difficult to achieve in a virtual environment.
