Ethical and Legal Issues in Surgery Today
Final Project in Assessment to E-Learning
Surgical Technologists are an integral part of the operative team; their skills and knowledge of equal importance to all involved with the patient’s care. Surgery today poses a vast array of circumstances that can affect the team’s ability to attend to their patient’s needs; all of which can be controversial in nature. It is essential for a surgical technologist to be able to both understand these concepts, as well as, identify with how it applies to them directly on a professional and a personal level.
Exposing students to these issues early in their academic pursuit will prepare them for the “non-technical aspects of professional practice.” (Jackson, 2007) The learning objectives highlighted in this project explore the legal, ethical and moral aspects they may face in their career while simultaneously assisting them in understanding the implications to their personal lives, their own morals and their role as an effective member of the surgical team. The assessments chosen for these objectives rely on a student-centered form of delivery that actively involves the student with their learning through discussion and participation. Lower level and higher level learning (as defined by Bloom’s taxonomy) such as case studies, research projects, small group debates, discussion boards, mind maps and blogs are utilized as the student progresses through the module.
The project is designed to assist the instructor in the creation of a course that identifies strengths and weaknesses of chosen activities and tools. Another goal of the assignment is to provide assurances for diversity of education and avoidance of plagiarism. All of these elements are requirements for a successful online course that is conducive to the student’s needs while learning and the instructor’s ability to reach a large group of individuals in a virtual environment.
