Learning Objective 3
Students will differentiate malpractice and negligence by participating in a debate discussion forum with at least 79% accuracy according to the project rubric.
Activity: Malpractice and Negligence for Surgical Techs
Research project and small group debate: Differentiate malpractice and negligence. Describe how each of these could apply to the surgical setting and your role as a surgical technologist. Provide examples that pertain immediately to the surgical technology profession. Participate in a ‘debate’ forum held in discussion board. One student will defend the example that was submitted to the class and another will oppose. All must relate directly to real time applications in surgery and consequences. The focus of this debate is to provide students with an equally valid viewpoint to both sides of the issue.
Assessment Tool:
Research project and small group debate. Differentiation between malpractice and negligence is possible after the students have researched the material and are capable of displaying a level of comprehension that then requires the students to analyze and make a determination based on the knowledge they have obtained thus far and how it applies to the surgical setting. The next phase of assessment for this activity transcends that knowledge through the use of small group debate where students have to defend/support their findings while simultaneously being exposed to multiple viewpoints that is designed to allow evaluation of the information to occur and determining validity to their personal beliefs and the real world setting.
The tool used for the debate portion of this activity will be a Wiki.
Pros: Allows the entire class to participate in the Wiki, adding supportive links to the discussion that they find in relation to their
arguements perspective.
Learning curve for this software is relatively low.
Cons: Two or more students can potentially be making updates to the Wiki at the same time which could lead to potential
data corruption.
To avoid public alteration of the document, it is a an absolute must that the instructor remember to password protect the site.
Authenticity:
Increases student awareness of potential malpractice and negligence situations they may experience once employed and the consequences of their actions.
