Surgical Technology Students, Gateway Technical College in Kenosha, WI
Associate Degree in Applied Science (state aligned two year programs)
Student’s entering this program typically are from South Eastern Wisconsin technical college school district which encompasses Elkhorn, Burlington, Racine, Kenosha and surrounding counties; however, it is not limited to this demographic and has drawn students from cities as far away as Madison in the past due to long wait lists at facilities closer to their home.
Students entering the program are individuals that have indicated a strong interest in allied health careers and have attended a mandatory enrollment orientation that details the profession and program requirements. A majority intend on seeking employment in the immediate area, thus serving the community while simultaneously reinforcing the mission statement of the college “We collaborate to ensure economic growth and viability by providing education, training, leadership, and technological resources to meet the changing needs of students, employers, and communities.” (Gateway, 2009)
The student population entering the program is rather diverse in age ranging from 22 – 35 years of age and covers an array of backgrounds, ethnicity and cultures; the commonality being the interest to care for other’s well-being at a healthcare facility. Students are required to complete a research paper on the profession and successfully pass General Anatomy & Physiology before consideration into the program will be granted.
