Strengths
A strength that applies to all of the chosen assessment tools is that they are higher levels of learning as defined by Bloom’s taxonomy. Each assignment that the students are given takes them through the basic levels of understanding first, allowing rudimentary level of comprehension and then expands on that knowledge by requiring them to work with other classmates.
During the small group work process, students obtain alternative viewpoints that they themselves may have otherwise missed which enriches their learning. It is here that the learning is elevated because the students are next required to synthesize the information that they have learned and then apply it to authentic settings that will be experienced in the surgical technology profession. By connecting the material in this manner to real world application, it allows the student to have an increased level of appreciation for the material which lends itself towards validity of content through realism.
The final stage of their learning is then the self-reflection where the students evaluate their personal viewpoints and the impact that the learning process, as well as, the material itself has on the outcome and how they arrived at it. Self-Assessment also allows the learner to see where (if any) changes were made in how they “see” the material and allows for the opportunity to acknowledge if further discovery is required. The inclusion of a portfolio during the reflection process provides students with a literal path that they can revisit to see their progression; additionally it may become repository of collected information that can be shared with potential employees upon graduation.
