Learning Objective 4
Students will analyze the Association of Surgical Technologists Code of Ethics, Scope of Practice and Standards of conduct as it applies to their personal role as a surgical technologist by performing a weekly reflection with at least 79% accuracy according to the project rubric.
Activity: Ethics and my Role as a Surgical Technologist
Analyze the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) Code of Ethics. Compare scope of practice and standard of conduct as it applies to your role as a surgical technologist in the surgery department. Once comparisons have been made, draw a conclusion stating which has more legal ramifications and support your rationale. Using a blog, reflect on your conclusion and rational, at the end of the semester this reflection will be re-evaluated by the student and modifications made where applicable. Students are required to include artifacts (created from previous assignments) that demonstrate their learning process that influenced the insights they have adopted. Additionally, students will perform weekly reflection on personal values in relation to real life situations that are discussed that week in class and assess the validity of each issue in their view. Students should consider: 1. What are their legal and ethical obligations? 2. What are legal implications of their actions? 3. What are the patient’s rights? 4. Does their findings conflict with personal ethics/morals and why? 5. Can they still perform the role expected of them regardless of personal belief?
Assessment Tool:
Blog and portfolio. Blogging will allow the student to demonstrate their level of comprehension for the material they are processing throughout the duration of the course. It is a written product of their personal ability to process what they have learned, reflect on the relevance of the material, interpret what meaning it holds for them personally and summarize thoughts, knowledge and feelings as it applies to the information and situations they have been exposed from the onset of the course to its completion. Each reflection requires an artifact of the discovery process that brought the student to their opinions/views which ultimately serves as a Portfolio of the student’s growth. The blog’s final entry will have the student revisiting the previous weeks and self-assess their personal growth.
Students will be given their choice of blogging and portfolio tools. All selections must be pre-approved by the instructor. Suggested sites are:
Blog: Blogger.com, WordPress.com
Portfolio: Weebly.com, Yola.com, Wix,com
Once the choice has been approved and an account created, students will be required to post a direct link to both in the discussion board in Blackboard under the appropriate thread.
Pros: Allowing the students to chose a site of their own will permit learners of differing computer skills and technology comfort
levels to find a site that is more conducive to their personal needs.
Adaptability to use these documents for the duration of the students education (or profession) because it is a source not
directly linked to the course shell.
Cons: Using multiple sites can cause difficulty in the monitoring process.
Using multiple sites decreases the instructors ability to provide adequate technical support if the student choses a
software program that he/she is unfamiliar with.
Authenticity:
Increases student awareness of their options when faced with ethical, moral and legal situations in the surgical setting; it also permits the student to determine if their personal beliefs will be an obstacle in their chosen profession. Ultimately this activity and assessment allows the student to see personal growth as it applies to the world they will be working.
