Learning Objective 1
Students will identify common ethical and legal dilemmas faced by surgical technologists by participating in a small group jigsaw project with at least 79% accuracy according to the project rubric.
Activity: Dilemmas in the Operating room
Identify common ethical and legal dilemmas faced by surgical technologists during small group discussions (jigsaw project) and share findings with the entire class by posting a written document that indicates their findings. In each small group, one student will be responsible for ethical findings and the other focused on legal. Students will have to support their selections and apply it to real world settings that could potentially occur in the operating room. Students answer all posts that are attached to their discussion thread and are required to comment on at least two other groups’ research (discussion board rubric for the course will be applied). The project will be considered successfully completed when the group can also provide (at minimum) two resolutions for the dilemmas they identified.
Assessment Tool:
Jigsaw. A jigsaw project allows students to build on their own and other’s insights of the proposed material; this in turn facilitates discussion between classmates and is ideal for an online environment where occasionally discussion can be difficult to promote and maintain. This form of assessment was also chosen for the first learning objective so that it sets the tone of the class at the beginning of the course while simultaneously encouraging students to interact with one another.
The Jigsaw project will be completed in Google Docs.
Pros: Seamless design process with a single shared documents making the exchange of information easy for both participants of the group.
The software itself is very intuitive and easy to use.
Cons: Unless the students share the document with the instructor, there is no way of monitoring their thought process.
The Discussion thread will be completed using Blackboard discussion board.
Pros: Built in grading system for Bb discussion board that allows both the instructors and classmates the opportunity to rate the
the appropriateness and authenticity of their choices.
Cons: There is the possibility of one or more students monopolizing the discussion.
Authenticity:
Increases student awareness of potential issues they may experience once employed and establishes at least two resolutions that they can apply when faced with these circumstances.
Rubric:
There will be a peer review, instructor rubric and discussion board rubric included with this project. The verbiage and design for the team assessment is not a product of my own and full credit must be given to Datta K. Khalsa. The discussion board rubric that used is strongly modeled after another individual’s work and credit must be given to Dennis O’Connor.
